     WHEREAS, Bennie Fleming served as Science Area Administrator Supervisor for |

Providence Schools from 1987 through 1996. She is former Education Director Medac Program |
1-3 |
at the Brown University School of Medicine and Director of the Brown University Medical |
1-4 |
School’s Summer Program; and |
1-5 |
     WHEREAS, Mrs. Fleming has actively served the health care community in the State of |
1-6 |
Rhode Island as a member of local and area medical programs and initiatives. She currently |
1-7 |
serves on the Boards of the American Heart Association (Past President), Planned Parenthood, |
1-8 |
and the Board of Directors of Miriam Hospital. She was appointed President of Planned |
1-9 |
Parenthood RI in 2001 and is also the Co-Chair of Miriam Hospital’s Review Board of Clinical |
1-10 |
Research Studies. She is a past president of both the American Cancer Society – Providence Unit |
1-11 |
and Black Administrators of Providence, Inc. She is a member of the Executive Board of the |
1-12 |
American Cancer Society and has served as Chairperson of the Urban League of Rhode Island’s |
1-13 |
Education Task Force and Chairperson of the Urban League of Rhode Island’s National Task |
1-14 |
Force Education Initiative from 1986 to 1992; and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, Mrs. Fleming was recognized as one of 350 Outstanding Citizens of |
1-16 |
Providence during the city’s 350th Anniversary Celebration. She is the past recipient of the |
1-17 |
NAACP’s Education Award, the National Association of Medical Minority Educators Award for |
1-18 |
Outstanding Contributions to the Health Profession in Education and the Distinguished Alumni |
1-19 |
Award in Nursing from Neharry Medical College. She was honored with the Gilman Angier |
2-1 |
Outstanding Board Award by Planned Parenthood RI. Based upon her commitment to education |
2-2 |
and health care in the greater Providence community, she received an honorary Doctor of |
2-3 |
Education degree from Providence College in 1988; and |
2-4 |
     WHEREAS, On Thursday, March 21, 2002, Mount Pleasant High School will conduct |
2-5 |
the Grand Opening and Dedication of the new School Based Health Center in honor of |
2-6 |
Providence Schools’ educator and nurse, Mrs. Bennie Y. Fleming. The Center will address a full |
2-7 |
range of health problems, becoming an integral part of a comprehensive and coordinated system |
2-8 |
of care for Mount Pleasant High School Students; now, therefore be it |
2-9 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-10 |
hereby honors Mrs. Bennie Y. Fleming for many years of dedication and numerous outstanding |
2-11 |
accomplishments to the health care community in the city of Providence and State of Rhode |
2-12 |
Island, We congratulate her on the grand opening and dedication of Mount Pleasant High |
2-13 |
School’s new School Based Health Center in her honor and wish her the very best for future |
2-14 |
happiness; and be it further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be an he is hereby authorized and directed to |
