CONGRATULATING JEROME DONOVAN ON BEING NAMED CHIEF MARSHAL OF | |
THE 2002 BRISTOL FOURTH OF JULY PARADE | |

     WHEREAS, Jerome Donovan, an outstanding member of the Bristol community and |

decorated World War II veteran has been named Chief Marshal of the nation's oldest, continuous |
1-3 |
Fourth of July Parade; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, A 1928 Colt Memorial High School graduate, Mr. Donovan served as a |
1-5 |
platoon sergeant in the United States Army's 77th Infantry Division during World War II. He |
1-6 |
served in Guam, Leyte, Rhetto and Okinawa and was among the first to occupy Hokkiedo, Japan; |
1-7 |
and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Mr. Donovan is a 50 year member and past Grand Knight of the Bristol |
1-9 |
Council Knights of Columbus. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Bristol |
1-10 |
County Lodge of Elks 1860, the Bristol Democratic Town Committee, the Bristol Train of |
1-11 |
Artillery and is an original member of Friends of Linden Place. He served on the Bristol Town |
1-12 |
Council for four years and was a founding member of the Bristol Bike Path Committee; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, A Purple Heart medal recipient, Mr. Donovan is State Commander of the |
1-14 |
Military Order of Purple Hearts, Chapter 1812. He is a past president of the Bristol Chapter of |
1-15 |
the American Association of Retired Persons, Bristol Historical Society and Bristol Rotary Club, |
1-16 |
from which he received a Paul Harris Fellowship; and |
1-17 |
     WHEREAS, Mr. Donovan was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National |
1-18 |
Convention in 1988 and served as Bristol Fire Commissioner. He is a volunteer for the |
1-19 |
Columban Fathers annual bazaar committee and for Meals on Wheels and ECHO. He also served |
1-20 |
as chairman of the Bristol Cancer Drive; and |

     WHEREAS, A former administrative assistant to former Bristol Town Administrator |
2-2 |
Thomas H. Byrnes, Jr., Mr. Donovan was employed by the former Collins & Aikman Company |
2-3 |
for 15 years and later became a store manager for the former Outlet Department Stores, a position |
2-4 |
he retired from after 30 years; and |
2-5 |
     WHEREAS, In 1998, Mr. Donovan was selected to be the main speaker at patriotic |
2-6 |
exercises in Bristol and was the 1994 recipient of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee's Hattie |
2-7 |
Brown Award in recognition of his extensive community service; now, therefore be it |
2-8 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-9 |
Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Jerome Donovan on being named Chief Marshal of |
2-10 |
the 2002 Bristol Fourth of July Parade and wishes him, his wife Grace, children and |
2-11 |
grandchildren a memorable Fourth of July, good health, and future happiness; and be it further |
2-12 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to |
2-13 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Jerome Donovan. |
