H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
HONORING THE GREATER WOONSOCKET YMCA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, On March 28, 1902, Rhode Island's Secretary of State, Charles P. Bennett granted the agents for the Woonsocket Young Men's Christian Association, the approval to form as a nonbusiness corporation; and
WHEREAS, These agents, the founders of the Woonsocket YMCA, John
Wrightman, Sullivan Ballow, William Monroe, Benjamin Gallup and Oscar Bennett stated their purpose as "...the improvement of the spiritual, mental, social and physical condition of young men."; and
WHEREAS, The Woonsocket YMCA, now an essential part of the greater Woonsocket community that includes members from Burrillville, Cumberland, North Smithfield, Bellingham, Blackstone, Lincoln and Woonsocket, is celebrating its 100th Anniversary of service to the community. With over 2,300 members and over 65 professional and trained staff, the Greater Woonsocket YMCA has long been considered the leading authority in aquatics. This exceptional organization has developed programs that include karate, senior fitness, aerobics, strength training, fencing, preschool programs, summer camping, and contributes to the YMCA's national reputation as the largest provider of childcare in America; and
WHEREAS, The "Old Woonsocket Post Office", entered in the U.S. Department of the Interior's "National Register of Historic Places"; has been transformed and incorporated into the YMCA's facility as a 25 yard, 6 lane heated pool which is the center of aquatic instruction and recreational natatorium; and
WHEREAS, The Greater Woonsocket YMCA is led by a volunteer Board of Directors, representative of the multifaceted community it serves. Its mission is to seek new innovations, programs and opportunities for all its valued members; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Greater Woonsocket YMCA on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary of outstanding commitment to its members by promoting growth through education, support services and good health; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Greater Woonsocket YMCA Executive Director Mr. Tim McManus.
