A N A C T
RELATING TO LABOR AND LABOR RELATIONS -- MINIMUM WAGES
It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 28-12-3 of the General Laws in Chapter 28-12 entitled "Minimum Wages" is hereby amended to read as follows:
28-12-3. Minimum wages -- Every employer shall pay to each of his or her employees wages at a rate not less than the minimum hereinafter specified: effective April 1, 1991, and thereafter, at a rate not less than four dollars and forty-five cents ($4.45) per hour except as hereinafter specified, provided, however, that the minimum wage commencing September 1, 1996 shall be four dollars and seventy-five cents ($4.75) per hour and that the minimum wage commencing January 1, 1997 shall be five dollars and fifteen cents ($5.15) per hour. Provided, however, that the minimum wage commencing July 1, 1999 shall be five dollars and sixty five cents ($5.65) per hour.; the minimum wage commencing July 1, 2000 shall be six dollars and twenty-five cents ($6.25) per hour; the minimum wage commencing July 1, 2001 shall be six dollars and seventy-five cents ($6.75) per hour; the minimum wage commencing July 1, 2002 and each July 1st thereafter shall be adjusted by a cost of living index for the period of March 31 through April 1 of the previous year as calculated for the Northeast Region by the United States Department of Labor.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

This act would raise the minimum wage to six dollars and twenty-five cents ($6.25) per hour on July 1, 2000, to six dollars and seventy-five cents ($6.75) per hour on July 1, 2001, and commencing July 1, 2000 and each July 1st thereafter raise the minimum wage pursuant to a cost of living index as calculated by the United States Department of Labor.
This act would take effect upon passage.
