A N A C T
RELATING TO EDUCATION -- STATE AID
It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
SECTION 1. Chapter 16-5 of the General Laws entitled "State Aid" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:
16-5-34. State contributions to the cities and towns. -- (a) The general assembly shall appropriate such sums for the costs, support and maintenance of public schools in the several cities and towns of the state pursuant to the following:
(i) Effective July 1, 2000, the state shall contribute fifty percent (50%) of the costs of public education and the several cities and towns shall contribute fifty percent (50%) of the costs;
(ii) Effective July 1, 2001, the state shall contribute fifty-five percent (55%) of the costs of public education and the several cities and towns shall contribute forty-five percent (45%) of the costs;
(iii) Effective July 1, 2002, the state shall contribute sixty percent (60%) of the costs of public education and the several cities and towns shall contribute forty percent (40%) of the costs;
(b) The state controller is hereby authorized and directed to draw his or her orders for the payment of the sum, or so much thereof as shall from time to time be required, on vouchers approved by the department of elementary and secondary education.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
