S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING SHANE STEPHEN HOTTIN UPON ACHIEVING

SCOUTING'S MOST DISTINGUISHED HONOR, THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT

     WHEREAS, Earning an Eagle Scout Badge is the pinnacle of achievement within the

1-2

Boy Scouts of America. It is an exceptional distinction achieved by fewer than five percent of all

1-3

the young men who enter scouting; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, Shane Stephen Hottin is a remarkable young man worthy of this prestigious

1-5

achievement and his accomplishments are truly deserving of our recognition; and

1-6

     WHEREAS, Shane began his scouting career at the age of seven as a member of the

1-7

Tiger Cub Scout Pack 42, Hope, Rhode Island, and quickly advanced his way up to Webelos. He

1-8

continued on to Boy Scouts, joining Troop 2, North Scituate, Rhode Island, in March 2004, where

1-9

he began his Eagle Scout journey, and ultimately earned the rank of Eagle on July 13, 2010; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, Learning important lifelong skills and values, Shane earned twenty-five

1-11

merit badges and served in leadership positions in Troop 2, North Scituate, including Assistant

1-12

Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, As the highlight of his scouting years and to complete the final step toward

1-14

obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout, Shane planned and carried out an extensive Eagle Scout

1-15

service project consisting of replacing the Town of Scituate Dog Pound sign. He collected

1-16

donations of materials from area businesses. After obtaining the proper materials, Shane and his

1-17

grandfather made an intricate hand-carved sign listing the town of Scituate’s animal shelter

1-18

business hours. He painted and stained the sign to match and reflect the rural and historical

1-19

community. After completion of the sign, Shane and his fellow scouts erected the sign at the

2-1

entrance of the animal shelter. Shane devoted countless hours and an amazing amount of energy

2-2

carrying out his project for the benefit of the community and visitors; and

     WHEREAS, Shane also finds the time and energy to be active at school. He has been

2-4

involved in the football, lacrosse, and cross-country teams. He was a lifeguard and earned his

2-5

black belt in Kenpo Karate on January 29, 2005; and

2-6

     WHEREAS, In addition, Eagle Scout Shane Stephen Hottin has volunteered countless

2-7

hours at the North Scituate Fire Department preparing fish and chips at the Saint Charles Food

2-8

Kitchen, and performing community roadside cleanup; and

2-9

     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth and to

2-10

celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders. Shane Stephen Hottin exemplifies

2-11

everything an Eagle Scout should be and all that we hope our children will grow to be; now,

2-12

therefore be it

2-13

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-14

hereby honors Shane Stephen Hottin for all he has done to attain the rank of Eagle within the Boy

2-15

Scouts of America; and be it further

2-16

     RESOLVED, That this Senate extends our deepest appreciation to Shane Stephen Hottin

2-17

for his untiring service to the community and for setting a high standard of commitment and

2-18

dedication by which youth of this great state may follow. We offer our very best wishes for good

2-19

health and happiness in the months and years ahead; and be it further

2-20

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-21

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Eagle Scout Shane Stephen Hottin.
