CONGRATULATING JOSEPH R. URGO ON BEING NAMED PRESIDENT OF SAINT | |

MARY'S COLLEGE OF MARYLAND | |

     WHEREAS, On March 26th of 2011, Joseph R. Urgo will be inaugurated as the 6th |
|

President of St. Mary’s College of Maryland; and |
|
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Mr. Urgo laid the foundation for a future |
|
1-4 |
replete with promise and unbounded potential. He attained his bachelor’s degree from Haverford |
|
1-5 |
College, his master’s degree from Wesleyan University, and a master’s degree and Ph.D from |
|
1-6 |
Brown University; and |
|
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, Residing in Cranston for fifteen years, Mr. Urgo was a teaching fellow |
|
1-8 |
while attending Brown from 1983 until 1985, and was a member of the Bryant College faculty for |
|
1-9 |
eleven years. He held a Fulbright lectureship in Spain and had taught as an Andrew W. Mellon |
|
1-10 |
Fellow and assistant professor at Vanderbilt University. He also served as a professor and Chair |
|
1-11 |
of the English Department at the University of Mississippi; and |
|
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, Mr. Urgo’s successes haven’t simply been the result of good fortune, but |
|
1-13 |
have moreover been due to his immense talents, intellectual aptitude, and focus. He has |
|
1-14 |
published six books, as well as co-editing numerous others, and he currently serves as the Chief |
|
1-15 |
Academic Officer at Hamilton College in New York; and |
|
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, Earning the respect of his colleagues and higher education community, Mr. |
|
1-17 |
Urgo has been honored with the Bryant College Alumni Association’s Distinguished Faculty |
|
1-18 |
Award and a $100,000 scholarship endowment in his honor; and |
|
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, Mr. Urgo is a paradigm of the very best leadership qualities and he is |
|
2-1 |
eminently worthy of our praise and acknowledgement; now, therefore be it |
|
2-2 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|
2-3 |
hereby congratulates Joseph Urgo on being inaugurated as President of Saint Mary’s College of |
|
2-4 |
Maryland. We furthermore wish him continued success, fulfillment, and good health; and be it |
|
2-5 |
further |
|

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-7 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Joseph R. Urgo. |
