H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N | |
RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE PORTSMOUTH AND TIVERTON FIRE
DEPARTMENTS | |
|
      |
|
      |
Introduced By: Representatives Reilly, Edwards, and Gallison
     Date Introduced: June 28, 2011
Referred To: House read and passed
1-1 |
WHEREAS, It's never a good idea to capsize your boat in treacherous waters during a |
1-2 |
hail storm, but if you do find yourself in the frigid water, as a New Hampshire resident recently |
1-3 |
did, then landing in the Sakonnet River near East Power Street in Portsmouth might just prove to |
1-4 |
be the safest place; and |
1-5 |
WHEREAS, After fierce winds overturned his daysailer, Kenneth Grinnell of |
1-6 |
Manchester, New Hampshire, clung to the hull of his small craft, well off-shore in the Sakonnet |
1-7 |
River; and |
1-8 |
WHEREAS, Called to the rescue were the Portsmouth and Tiverton Fire Departments, |
1-9 |
who worked as a synchronized team, quickly assessing the situation and sending out boats to |
1-10 |
launch the rescue effort; and |
1-11 |
WHEREAS, With poor visibility due to the weather, Chief Jeffrey Lynch, who had |
1-12 |
established a position on shore, enlisted the help of two civilians with binoculars to keep him |
1-13 |
updated on the status of the three boats on the water so he could coordinate their efforts; and |
1-14 |
WHEREAS, In the Portsmouth rescue boat were Captain Eric Hajder and Firefighters |
1-15 |
Brian Baker and William DePiero. Tiverton’s recue craft was manned by Lieutenant Mark |
1-16 |
Reimels, Firefighter Craig Comitto, Firefighter Bradford Lynch, and Probationary Firefighter |
1-17 |
Cipriano Illiano; and |
1-18 |
WHEREAS, After spending at least a half hour in the water, Mr. Grinnell was safely |
1-19 |
assisted to shore where no medical intervention was required; and |
2-1 |
WHEREAS, The laudable actions of the Portsmouth and Tiverton Fire Departments, and |
2-2 |
also Portsmouth Police and Harbormaster Stephen Burns, reflect the kind of dedication to duty |
2-3 |
and professionalism that defines a true hero, and they are all truly deserving of our gratitude, |
2-4 |
admiration, and recognition; now, therefore be it |
2-5 |
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-6 |
Providence Plantations hereby honors Chief Jeffrey Lynch, Captain Eric Hajder, Firefighter Brian |
2-7 |
Baker, Firefighter William DePiero, Lieutenant Mark Reimels, Firefighter Craig Comitto, |
2-8 |
Firefighter Bradford Lynch, and Probationary Firefighter Cipriano Illiano for rescuing Kenneth |
2-9 |
Grinnell from his capsized boat on the Sakonnet River in Portsmouth. We thank them for their |
2-10 |
bravery, fast action, and perceptive judgment; and be it further |
2-11 |
