EXPRESSING PROFOUND SYMPATHY ON THE PASSING OF THE VENERABLE ROS | |

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of the |
|

Venerable Ros Mey, the Chov Atika and President of the Khmer Buddhist Society; and |
|
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, Born into a large family in Svay Rolom, Kandal in Cambodia, his Holiness, |
|
1-4 |
the Venerable Ros Mey was the son of Ouch Mey and Soeum Mon. He worked for the |
|
1-5 |
Cambodian government as a land surveyor and was married to the late Syathun Mey. Together, |
|
1-6 |
they had seven children; and |
|
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, During 1975, the Mey family and the entire country of Cambodia were |
|
1-8 |
imprisoned by the Khmer Rouge, communist regime. Years of savage war and the genocide of |
|
1-9 |
more than a million people in Cambodia also brought tragedy to the Mey family, who lost one |
|
1-10 |
son and three daughters during these tumultuous years. In 1979, the Mey family were resettled in |
|
1-11 |
refugee camp Khoa I Dang in Thailand; and |
|
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, The Mey family came to Rhode Island on February 12th of 1982 to make |
|
1-13 |
their home. Eleven years later, Ros Mey was ordained as the Cambodian Buddhist monk at Wat |
|
1-14 |
Thormikaram of Rhode Island; and |
|
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, Becoming ordained as a Buddhist monk requires an immense sacrifice. It is |
|
1-16 |
a decision to leave behind all of one’s belongings, necessities, and attachments, including all ties |
|
1-17 |
to one’s family members, in search of the truth and peaceful path; and |
|
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, There is no doubt that the life and sacrifices of his Holiness, the Venerable |
|
1-19 |
Ros Mey left this world a far better place. His efforts uplifted and enriched the lives of all who |
|

knew him, and his empathy and compassion were boundless and an inspiration to us all; now, |
|
2-2 |
therefore be it |
|
2-3 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
2-4 |
Providence Plantations hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of his Holiness, |
|
2-5 |
the Venerable Ros Mey; and be it further |
|
2-6 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-7 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Khmer Buddhist Society Temple of Rhode |
|
2-8 |
Island. |
