RECOGNIZING ALYSSA CONLAN FOR HER MUNIFICENT CONTRIBUTIONS

TOWARDS THE HAITIAN RELIEF EFFORTS

     WHEREAS, Alyssa Conlan was born in January of 2002, to the delight of her very proud

parents, Dawn and Dan Conlan; and

     WHEREAS, Plans to celebrate Alyssa's eighth birthday included those favorite little girl

1-4

activities of painting nails and going to the movies, but after watching the horrific aftermath of a

1-5

devastating earthquake unfolding in the news, Alyssa decided to put aside her planned party

1-6

events and try to do something to help the devastated people of Haiti; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, After discussions with her parents, the second-grader approached the

1-8

Principal of her school to get permission to raise funds for Haitian relief efforts. Enlisting the

1-9

assistance of her "Memere," Marguerite Gasior, advice from the Cardi's Store in West Warwick,

1-10

and help from her aunt, her grandmother, her sister, her cousin, and her parents, Alyssa spent her

1-11

birthday weekend collecting $363.10 in donations from local businesses. She then held a

1-12

collection drive at her school and collected $1,191.32, raising a grand total of $1554.42, which

1-13

she will present to the American Red Cross for the Haiti Disaster Relief Fund; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, Alyssa's life experiences have encompassed only eight short years, but in

1-15

that brief amount of time, she has already impacted the lives of so many people through her

1-16

generosity and kindness; and

1-17

     WHEREAS, Blessed with the heart of a true philanthropist and a determination of

1-18

purpose that belies her youth, Alyssa is a remarkable young lady who exemplifies the best in

1-19

human nature and all that we hope our children will grow to be; now, therefore be it

2-1

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-2

hereby recognizes and applauds Alyssa Conlan for her magnanimous efforts in helping the people

2-3

of Haiti during their time of need; and be it further

2-4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Alyssa Conlan.
