HONORING FORMER GOVERNOR BRUCE SUNDLUN ON THE OCCASION OF HIS | |
90TH BIRTHDAY | |

     WHEREAS, The year 1920 was a time of great happenings in the United States. |

Woodrow Wilson was President, prohibition was in effect, and The Honorable Bruce Sundlun |

was born on the 19th of January in Providence, Rhode Island; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Williams College, The Honorable Bruce Sundlun |
1-5 |
served his country with honor and distinction as a pilot during World War II. He was shot down |
1-6 |
over Nazi-occupied Belgium in 1943 and was later awarded the Purple Heart, the Distinguished |
1-7 |
Flying Cross, the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster from the United States, and Chevalier of the |
1-8 |
Légion d'honneur from the Republic of France; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, After returning stateside, The Honorable Bruce Sundlun attained his law |
1-10 |
degree from Harvard University and began practicing law. He served from 1949 to 1951 as an |
1-11 |
Assistant United States Attorney, and from 1954 to 1972 as Special Assistant to the United States |
1-12 |
Attorney General; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, From the 1960s through the 1990s, The Honorable Bruce Sundlun built a |
1-14 |
reputation as a savvy and successful businessman, and in 1991, after a landslide victory, he was |
1-15 |
sworn in as the 71st Governor of Rhode Island; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, Some people never retire, although they do occasionally relinquish their |
1-17 |
driver’s license. Such has been the case for The Honorable Bruce Sundlun. He continues to be |
1-18 |
active with lectures, writing, and promoting innumerable ideas to enhance and improve life in our |
1-19 |
Ocean State; now, therefore be it |

      RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |

hereby honors Governor Bruce Sundlun on the occasion of his 90th birthday. We furthermore |
2-3 |
thank him for his leadership, especially during the financial quagmire of the early 1990s, and we |
2-4 |
extend our best wishes for his continued success, health, and happiness; and be it further |
2-5 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-6 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Honorable Bruce Sundlun. |
