CONGRATULATING THE SMITHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY TEAM ON WINNING | |
THE 2009 RHODE ISLAND DIVISION II STATE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP | |

     WHEREAS, The Smithfield High School hockey team joined elite company on Sunday, |

March 15, 2009, with its Cox Sports Frozen Finals Division II State Championship 6-0 rout of |

North Kingstown at Schneider Arena; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, The Smithfield High School hockey team capped a perfect season by |
1-5 |
defeating North Kingstown in two straight games by scores of 3-2 and 6-0; and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, Not only did the Sentinels win the eighth hockey title in school history and |
1-7 |
their third in the last four years, but they did it with a perfect 25-0 record; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, It only took four minutes for the Sentinels to establish their dominance over |
1-9 |
the Skippers. That's when Nathan Iannuccillo, off assists from Mike Giuliani and Jeff Langellier, |
1-10 |
gave the Sentinels a 1-0 lead with a goal that set the tone of the game; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Giuliani gave Smithfield a 2-0 advantage when he scored with 2:22 |
1-12 |
remaining in the first period, and Paul Harrison put one between the pipes on a breakaway with |
1-13 |
5:41 remaining in the second period; and |
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, Colby Fugere netted both of his goals in the third period to put the game out |
1-15 |
of reach, and Iannuccillo added another with 1:52 remaining in the game; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, Fugere scored two goals and had an assist, as did Iannuccillo. They both |
1-17 |
benefited from the unselfish play; and |
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, As good as Guiliani played, over the two games (two goals, three assists) |
1-19 |
that earned him the Most Valuable Player Award, winning a state championship requires a team |
2-1 |
effort with many individuals contributing significantly; and |
2-2 |
     WHEREAS, Smithfield goalie Vincent Tedino missed most of the season because of a |
2-3 |
partially torn MCL in his right knee, but he returned one game before the playoffs and made 15 |
2-4 |
saves to preserve the shutout; and |
2-5 |
     WHEREAS, Smithfield coach Rob Jackson said that he couldn't be prouder of his perfect |
2-6 |
team; now, therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-8 |
hereby congratulates the Smithfield High School hockey team for winning the Rhode Island |
2-9 |
Division II State Championship, and wish all involved continued success in all future endeavors; |
2-10 |
and be it further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-12 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to coach Rob Jackson. |
