CONGRATULATING MOUNT SAINT CHARLES HIGH SCHOOL ON WINNING THE
RHODE ISLAND DIVISION I BOYS STATE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP
|
      |
|
      |
Introduced By: Senators Cote, and Picard
     Date Introduced: March 25, 2009
Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration
1-1 |
WHEREAS, The Mount Saint Charles storied hockey program has won twenty-eight |
1-2 |
state championships in a thirty-two year period. None perhaps were as dramatic as the one won |
1-3 |
in 2009 as Mount Saint Charles defeated Hendricken High School in two straight playoff games |
1-4 |
at Schneider Arena, both won in overtime with the Mounties trailing at one time by two goals in |
1-5 |
each game; and |
1-6 |
WHEREAS, In the first game Mount Saint Charles came storming back from a 3-1 |
1-7 |
deficit to tie the game in regulation thanks to two clutch goals by star player Evan Hoffman, the |
1-8 |
tying goal coming with less than four minutes to play in regulation. In overtime Mounties |
1-9 |
Goaltender Jason SanAntonio made some big saves before Hoffman used his sterling playmaking |
1-10 |
skills to set up Tim Doyle for the winning goal with only twenty-six seconds left in the first |
1-11 |
overtime period; and |
1-12 |
WHEREAS, The second hockey playoff game will go down as one of the most thrilling |
1-13 |
games in the history of Rhode Island high school hockey. Once again Mount Saint Charles faced |
1-14 |
a two-goal deficit, this time after two periods of play, before surging back to take the lead thanks |
1-15 |
to key goals by Zack Samborsky, Tim Coffey and Shane Dunphy. Hendricken scored a goal late |
1-16 |
in regulation to force overtime. With neither team able to score through two sudden death |
1-17 |
overtimes and with both teams completely exhausted in the third extra session, first game hero |
1-18 |
Evan Hoffman ended the game when he banged home a rebound to win the game 5-4, and the |
1-19 |
State Championship for Mount Saint Charles; now, therefore be it |
2-1 |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-2 |
hereby congratulates Mount Saint Charles High School on winning the 2009 Rhode Island |
2-3 |
Division I High School Boys State Hockey Championship; and be it further |
2-4 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-5 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mount Saint Charles High School Boys |
2-6 |
Hockey co-head coach Dave Belisle. |
