HONORING KAREN ADAMS ON THE OCCASION OF HER 20TH ANNIVERSARY AT

WPRI-TV

     WHEREAS, Born on the 4th of July, Karen Adams’ birth date may have been an early

1-2

indication of the dazzling future that lay ahead; and

1-3

      WHEREAS, Karen originally hailed from Nevada, Missouri. She attained her degree in

1-4

Speech and Theatre with a minor in Journalism from Southwest Missouri State University; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, Although Karen began her broadcasting career in radio, it quickly became

1-6

evident that her forte would be in front of the camera. She acquired amazing proficiency and an

1-7

impressive resume working at a variety of broadcasting jobs. She had been a reporter, an anchor

1-8

and a news director in Missouri, Maryland, and North Carolina before arriving on the scene in

1-9

Rhode Island; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, To the very good fortune of the Ocean State, Karen became the television

1-11

news anchor for WPRI-TV (LIN Television Corp.) in 1989. She also met, fell in love and married

1-12

a native Rhode Islander, further cementing her decision to make Rhode Island her home; and

1-13

      WHEREAS, Karen’s professional career has been consistently and copiously recognized

1-14

with a myriad of prestigious awards and honors. She has earned the coveted Emmy Award on

1-15

numerous occasions, has been inducted into the “Silver Circle”, and received the Gavel Award, a

1-16

“Lifetime Learning” Award and the “Woman of Distinction” Award, to name just a few; and

1-17

     WHEREAS, Throughout the last two decades, Karen has also found the time to dedicate

1-18

her talents to a panoply of charities, including fundraising for Meeting Street School, Aids Project

1-19

Rhode Island, the American Cancer Society, Roger Williams Hospital, United Way, several local

2-1

colleges, and just about every organization who asks for her help; and

2-2

     WHEREAS, Karen’s comprehensive reporting of Rhode Island and world events is

2-3

consistently professional and well-reasoned, and her dedication to both her profession and

2-4

altruistic endeavors has earned her the admiration of her colleagues and audience, and the

2-5

gratitude and respect of nearly every New Englander; now, therefore be it

2-6

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-7

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Karen Adams on her 20th Anniversary with WPRI-

2-8

TV. We furthermore thank her on behalf of all Rhode Islanders for her eloquent and informative

2-9

news reporting and wholehearted dedication to our community. We wish her the very best health,

2-10

happiness and continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it further

2-11

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-12

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Karen Adams.
