RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO | |

PRIORITIZE BUILDING THE NEW SAKONNET BRIDGE | |

WHEREAS, Built in 1956, the Sakonnet River Bridge is a four-lane truss bridge that |
|

spans the Sakonnet River in eastern Rhode Island and carries Rt. 24 and Rt. 138 between |
|
1-3 |
Portsmouth and Tiverton. The bridge also provides tens of thousands of drivers with a critical |
|
1-4 |
link between Rhode Island and Massachusetts; and |
|
1-5 |
WHEREAS, Due to serious deterioration, the bridge is slated for replacement. A new |
|
1-6 |
four-lane structure is to be built just south of the current structure that will accommodate new |
|
1-7 |
standards for shoulder width and an increased structural capacity. In the meantime, restrictions |
|
1-8 |
on travel and transport over the Sakonnet River Bridge have been issued; and |
|
1-9 |
WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (DOT) has been directed to |
|
1-10 |
restrict many vehicles, including tourism buses from using the bridge, forcing them to seek |
|
1-11 |
alternate routes; and |
|
1-12 |
WHEREAS, The timely construction of the new Sakonnet River Bridge is an essential |
|
1-13 |
component of the transportation infrastructure for many of Rhode Island's East Bay |
|
1-14 |
neighborhoods, and the bridge's full usage is urgently needed for the vitality of local businesses |
|
1-15 |
and enterprises; now, therefore be it |
|
1-16 |
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
1-17 |
Providence Plantations hereby strongly urges the Director of the Department of Transportation to |
|
1-18 |
prioritize construction of the new Sakonnet River Bridge; and be it further |
|
1-19 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-1 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Director of the Department of |
|
2-2 |
Transportation. |
