HONORING JAMES ROBERT MCTIGUE | |

ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 85TH BIRTHDAY | |

     WHEREAS, James Robert McTigue was born eight and a half decades ago on April 19th |
|

of 1923. It was a time of vast changes in the United States and around the world. Vice President |
|
1-3 |
Calvin Coolidge assumed the Presidency of the United States when President Warren G. Harding |
|
1-4 |
passed away while in office, the cost of a first class stamp was 2¢, a loaf of bread was 9¢, and the |
|
1-5 |
average cost for a car was only $285; and |
|
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Mr. McTigue’s parents, Nellie Carpenter |
|
1-7 |
and Francis McTigue, had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. Mr. McTigue made his |
|
1-8 |
home in Worcester for most of his life, until recently moving into an assisted living facility in |
|
1-9 |
Bristol, Rhode Island. He attended South High School, and like so many young men at the time, |
|
1-10 |
he enlisted in the Marine Corps the day after graduation; and |
|
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Mr. McTigue served his country with honor and distinction in the Third |
|
1-12 |
Division of the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He saw action in both Iwo |
|
1-13 |
Jima and Guam, and received the Purple Heart for his valor while serving in the Pacific Theater; |
|
1-14 |
and |
|
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, Upon returning from the service, Mr. McTigue met and fell in love with his |
|
1-16 |
beautiful bride of fifty years, the late Alfreda Kusmierski, who sadly passed away in 2000. |
|

Together, James and Alfreda raised four children, Suzanne Marie, Linda Jane, Nancy Elizabeth |
|
1-18 |
and James Robert McTigue, Jr. He has also been blessed with eight grandchildren, Seth, |
|
1-19 |
Jonathan and Sarah Magaziner of Bristol; Brendon, Jon and Kai Cornwell of Virginia; and |
|

Katrina and Georgiana McTigue of Virginia, and four wonderful sons and daughters-in-law, Ira |
|

Magaziner, John Bushee, and David Cornwell, and Carla McTigue; and |
|
2-3 |
     WHEREAS, Mr. McTigue worked as a quality inspector for airplane and other precision |
|
2-4 |
metal parts at Wyman-Gordon Company in Worcester, Massachusetts until his retirement; and |
|
2-5 |
     WHEREAS, With a life that has thus far spanned eight and a half decades, James |
|
2-6 |
McTigue has blessed the lives of those around him. He treasures the love of his family, has pride |
|
2-7 |
in his Irish Heritage, endures the elation and exasperation of being a Red Sox fan, and is a “life- |
|
2-8 |
long and increasingly outspoken and committed Democrat.” Though having to endure many |
|
2-9 |
challenges throughout his life, including the Great Depression, World War II, and numerous |
|
2-10 |
health issues, James McTigue has never lost his spirit, his courage and his overall exuberance for |
|
2-11 |
life; now, therefore be it |
|
2-12 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|
2-13 |
hereby joins the family and many friends of James Robert McTigue in wishing him a very happy |
|
2-14 |
85th Birthday. We wish him good health and happiness for many years to come; and be it further |
|
2-15 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-16 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Suzanne Magaziner. |
