ON THE PASSING OF SGT. SHANE P. DUFFY | |

     WHEREAS, Rhode Islanders and all Americans are proud of the great courage and |

commitment Sgt. Shane P. Duffy demonstrated while serving with the United States Army, and |
1-3 |
so it is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of his tragic passing on June 4th of 2008; |
1-4 |
and |
1-5 |
      WHEREAS, Sgt. Duffy was the son of Keavin and Frances Duffy. He was the loving |
1-6 |
husband of Jamie Lynn Duffy, and the proud father of his beautiful baby girl, Mackenzie. He |
1-7 |
was the grandson of the late Leo and Teresa Duffy, Sr., and the beloved brother of Keavin Duffy, |
1-8 |
Jr. and Shannon Duffy; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, With valor and distinction, Sgt. Duffy served in the 1st Battalion, 87 Infantry |
1-10 |
Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) out of Fort Drum, |
1-11 |
New York; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Sgt. Duffy was on active duty. He suffered fatal |
1-13 |
wounds from small arms fire during a hostile action while conducting military operations in |
1-14 |
Sharqat, Iraq; and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, Earning numerous honors and distinctions during his military service, Sgt. |
1-16 |
Duffy was awarded the Purple Heart, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct |
1-17 |
Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on |
1-18 |
Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat |
1-19 |
Infantryman Badge, and the Air Assault Badge; and |
2-1 |
     WHEREAS, Our thoughts and hearts hold great empathy and sorrow for the family of |
2-2 |
Sgt. Shane P. Duffy. It is essential that they know they are never far from our thoughts and |
2-3 |
prayers, and that we recognize that our liberties and human rights are safeguarded by the heroic |
2-4 |
service of Shane, and the actions of all the brave and valiant members of the Armed Forces; now, |
2-5 |
therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-7 |
hereby recognizes and honors Sgt. Shane P. Duffy for his courage, sacrifice, and commitment to |
2-8 |
the causes of democracy and freedom; and be it further |
2-9 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby expresses our deepest sympathies to the entire |
2-10 |
Duffy family on the passing of Sgt. Shane P. Duffy; and be it further |
2-11 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-12 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Jamie Lynn Duffy and Family, and Keavin and |
2-13 |
Frances Duffy and Family. |
