HONORING JAMES PATRICK MURPHY ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 88TH BIRTHDAY | |

     WHEREAS, James Patrick Murphy was born on April 23, 1920, in West Warwick, |

Rhode Island. With the exception of his time spent in the military, he has been a lifelong resident |

of the town; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Upon graduation from West Warwick High School in 1938, James enrolled |
1-5 |
in the United States Army. With honor and distinction, he served his country from January 10, |
1-6 |
1940 until March 3, 1945. As a member of the “Greatest Generation,” James valiantly defended |
1-7 |
this country and the causes of liberty and freedom for all, during World War II. Over the course |
1-8 |
of the next eight years, he served as a reservist with the 76th Infantry Company H; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, After his military service, James returned home to West Warwick and |
1-10 |
became a house painter. He met and married his lovely wife Terri and together they had one son, |
1-11 |
the late Michael Murphy; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, Governor John O. Pastore asked James to serve on the Veteran’s Bonus |
1-13 |
Board, thus beginning a pattern of dedication to public service that has endured throughout his |
1-14 |
lifetime. In addition, James’ career with the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training |
1-15 |
spanned the next thirty-eight years; and |
1-16 |
     WHEREAS, James has participated in the civic life of the town of West Warwick as well |
1-17 |
as the state for decades. He enthusiastically helped at the Kent County Memorial Hospital; served |
1-18 |
as a volunteer in the West Warwick Town Planner’s Office for eight years, where he was so |
1-19 |
instrumental in developing the West Warwick Industrial Park that they named a park entrance |
1-20 |
road the “James P. Murphy Highway” in his honor; he was on the West Warwick Country Club |

Board of Directors as well as a member for forty-eight years; and has spent his lifetime actively |
2-2 |
involved with the Democrat Party in the town of West Warwick; and |
2-3 |
     WHEREAS, A remarkable gentleman who bravely served this country and provided |
2-4 |
admirable service to Rhode Island and its grateful citizens for many years, James Patrick Murphy |
2-5 |
is a role model and inspiration to us all; now, therefore be it |
2-6 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-7 |
Providence Plantations is hereby pleased to join family and friends in celebration of James |
2-8 |
Patrick Murphy’s 88th Birthday on April 23, 2008. We wish him happiness and fulfillment for |
2-9 |
many years to come; and be it further |
2-10 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to |
2-11 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to James Patrick Murphy. |
