A N A C T

RELATING TO HIGHWAYS - OUTDOOR ADVERTISING

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 24-10.1-4 of the General Laws in Chapter 24-10.1 entitled

"Outdoor Advertising" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     24-10.1-4. Regulation of advertising. -- The director of transportation is hereby

authorized to promulgate regulations governing the issuance of permits for the erection and

1-5

maintenance of outdoor advertising coming within the exceptions contained in subsections (1),

1-6

(4) and (5) of section 24-10.1-3 consistent with the safety and welfare of the traveling public, and

as may be necessary to carry out the policy of the state declared in this chapter, and consistent

1-8

with the national standards promulgated by the secretary of commerce pursuant to title 23, United

1-9

States Code ;provided, however, outdoor advertising of alcoholic beverages, and all references

1-10

thereto, on highway or road signs and billboards within the state of Rhode Island are prohibited.

All permit fees collected pursuant to regulations promulgated under this section shall be

1-12

deposited in the intermodal surface transportation fund.

1-13

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
