     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of David |
|

Halberstam. He was a brilliant journalist who relentlessly followed his stories, and a nationally |
|
1-3 |
acclaimed author, who was tragically killed in a car crash, at the age of 73, while in pursuit of his |
|
1-4 |
latest research; and |
|
1-5 |
      WHEREAS, Born in New York City, the son of an Army surgeon and a school teacher, |
|
1-6 |
Mr. Halberstam attended Harvard where he was editor of the student newspaper. He later |
|
1-7 |
reported on the civil rights movement in the South for the Daily Times Leader of West Point and |
|
1-8 |
the Nashville Tennessean. He married Jean Sandness, who is also a writer, and together the |
|
1-9 |
couple had one daughter, Julia; and |
|
1-10 |
      WHEREAS, Joining the New York Times in 1960, Mr. Halberstam’s nascent career took |
|
1-11 |
him to Vietnam, where his often controversial insights into America’s policy ignited discussions |
|
1-12 |
and controversy on a national level; and |
|
1-13 |
      WHEREAS, Mr. Halberstam became a world renowned author who is perhaps best |
|
1-14 |
known for his novel “The Best and the Brightest”, a memorable analysis of the flaws in American |
|
1-15 |
policy towards Vietnam; and |
|
1-16 |
      WHEREAS, Delving into topics on sports and athletic competition, Mr. Halberstam also |
|
1-17 |
authored “The Amateurs” and “The Breaks of the Game” to name just a few of his acclaimed |
|
1-18 |
works; and |
|

      WHEREAS, There is no doubt that David Halberstam, a brilliant free-thinker and a |
|
2-2 |
gentleman, left the literary community and this nation more informed and enlightened by his |
|
2-3 |
life’s endeavors. His integrity and common sense enriched the lives of all who knew him and set |
|
2-4 |
a standard for journalistic excellence that is an inspiration to us all; now, therefore be it |
|
2-5 |
      RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
2-6 |
Providence Plantations hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of David |
|
2-7 |
Halberstam; and be it further |
|
2-8 |
      RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-9 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Jean Halberstam and Julia Halberstam. |
