CONGRATULATING NEWLY ELECTED SPEAKER OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF | |

REPRESENTATIVES NANCY PELOSI | |

WHEREAS, The Honorable Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi, an enormously well-respected |

member of the United States House of Representatives, has become the first female House |

Speaker and second in line to the presidency in the more than 200 year history of our country’s |

government; and |
|
1-5 |
WHEREAS, A self-proclaimed San Francisco liberal, Speaker Pelosi was born and raised |
|

in Baltimore, is the mother of five and grandmother of six, and deeply proud of her Italian- |
|
1-7 |
American heritage and devout Catholic upbringing; and |
|
1-8 |
WHEREAS, In a House vote of 233 to 202, which broke along party lines, Speaker |
|
1-9 |
Pelosi’s ascension is a significant milestone in the struggle for equality of women’s rights, as well |
|
1-10 |
as a richly deserved personal achievement; and |
|
1-11 |
WHEREAS, In her acceptance speech, Speaker Pelosi stated, “By electing me as |
|

Speaker you have brought us closer to the ideal of equality that is America’s heritage and |
|

America’s hope...For our daughters and our granddaughters now, the sky is the limit”; and |

WHEREAS, For all her munificent accomplishments, Speaker Pelosi is truly an |
|
1-15 |
inspiration to all women. She is a paradigm of the very best leadership qualities, and is |
|
1-16 |
eminently worthy of our praise and acknowledgement; now, therefore be it |
|
1-17 |
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
1-18 |
Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Honorable Nancy Pelosi on becoming the new |
|
1-19 |
Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. We can think of no one who is more |
|

deserving of this title. We wish her a productive and successful session and the very best health |
|

and happiness in all her endeavors; and be it further |
|

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the |
