WHEREAS, On July 7, 1999, the Perryville Grange is honoring David Gates for outstanding service to his community and dedication to its citizens; and
WHEREAS, David Gates, born in Wakefield, Rhode Island on April 13, 1959, the son of William and Mitzi (Stauffer), has one brother, Murray and two sisters, Mitzi and Elizabeth. He is the loving father of one son, Aaron; and
WHEREAS, David attended South Kingstown High School, the University of Rhode Island, the University of Uppsala, Sweden, and then graduated from San Diego University. On February 28, 1979, David joined the United States Marine Corps. He accepted an officer's commission and traveled extensively throughout Europe and Southeast Asia. On October 15, 1986 resigned his officer's commission; and
WHEREAS, David returned to Wakefield and began working for the Gates Insurance Agency. In June, 1998, he was named President of Gates Insurance; and
WHEREAS, David is a past member of the board for the South Kingstown Town Chamber of Commerce and The Pettaquamscutt Historical Society and is a current board member of the South Kingstown Lions Club. He is a life member of the Peace Dale Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, David's strong interest in history has involved him in several local projects including: the production of a volunteer firefighter tape to encourage new recruits, the restoration of movie footage of parades in South Kingstown and Narragansett from the 1930's, entitled "It's a Holiday", fundraising for renovations to the South County YMCA, restoration of the old courthouse at West Kingston for the South County Center for the Arts, and the moving and restoration of the old school administration building; now therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby congratulates David Gates on being honored by the Perryville Grange for his outstanding and dedicated community service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to David Gates.
