PROCLAIMING MAY 3, 2001 AS" RHODE ISLAND COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER DAY"

Introduced By:  Senators Perry, Walton, McCaffrey, Kells, Paiva Weed Date Introduced:  May 3, 2001

WHEREAS, There are 14 community health center systems at over 20 locations statewide providing over 80,000 medical and dental visits each year to men, women and children; and

WHEREAS, As the nation continues to struggle to find solutions to the healthcare crisis, the community health centers began providing primary healthcare services in 1967; and

WHEREAS, Health centers provide primary health care to over 26,000 uninsured persons each year; and

WHEREAS, Over 26% of all infants under the age of 1 receive their healthcare at community health centers; and

WHEREAS, In 1993, the community health centers strengthened their commitment to healthcare by forming their own health maintenance organization. The Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island allows the community health centers to participate fully in the State's Managed Care initiative for Medicaid beneficiaries as well as developing insurance programs for moderate income workers; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims May 3, 2001 as "Rhode Island Community Health Center Day;" and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island.
