S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
SUPPORTING THE 2024 LEUKEMIA LYMPHOMA SOCIETY’S "LIGHT THE NIGHT® WALK" EVENT ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2024

     WHEREAS, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is a 501(c)(3) charitable
organization, and is a global leader in the fight against blood cancer; and
     WHEREAS, The noble mission of LLS is to ultimately “cure leukemia, lymphoma,
Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families”;
and
     WHEREAS, Leukemia is a cancer that affects the white blood cells in the body, starting
in the bone marrow, where the cells are produced, and eventually disrupts the normal production
of these cells; and
     WHEREAS, There are many types of Leukemia, and the exact cause of this disease is
unknown. It can occur at any age, but it is more common in adults than children; and
     WHEREAS, LLS supports and raises funding for “lifesaving blood cancer research
around the world, provides free information and support services, and is a voice for blood cancer
patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care”; and
     WHEREAS, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Light The Night® Walk”, to be
held on September 22, 2024, is a premier fundraising event established to help fund lifesaving
research, provide advocacy and support for blood cancer patients and their families, and raise
awareness and bring communities together to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by blood
cancer; and
     WHEREAS, The “Light The Night® Walk”, is an evening event, held in the City of
Providence, beginning at the Rhode Island State House, and culminating with “bringing light to
the darkness of cancer with lanterns of hope”; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby supports the 2024
Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s “Light The Night® Walk” on September 22, 2024 and
encourages all Rhode Islanders to join in this special evening walk to help fund research to find
cures and ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Laura Lanni, Campaign Development Manager
for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Providence Light The Night® Walk.
