H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N
CELEBRATING AND SUPPORTING THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF 401GIVES, RHODE ISLAND'S STATEWIDE DAY OF GIVING ON APRIL 1, 2024

     WHEREAS, Winston Churchill is quoted as saying “We make a living by what we get;
we make a life by what we give.” Powered by the United Way of Rhode Island, 401Gives
empowers every Rhode Islander with the ability to expand their hearts and lives through the joy
of helping others; and
     WHEREAS, Started in April of 2020, to help altruistic organizations during the COVID
pandemic, 401Gives provides all Rhode Islanders with “a safe, comfortable, and familiar virtual
fundraising experience,” to donate to nonprofit organizations throughout the State; and
     WHEREAS, Currently, Rhode Island’s nonprofit sector employs 16 percent of the State’s
workforce, representing a higher portion of the RI workforce than the manufacturing industry;
and
     WHEREAS, From education to social needs, as well as the arts, parks, and more, Rhode
Island’s nonprofit sector touches every aspect of life in our State; and
     WHEREAS, Over the past four years, 401Gives has raised and distributed $10 million to
more than 800 nonprofits across Rhode Island, and attained a donation realization rate, which is
how much each organization “took home”, of more than 99 percent of their goal; and
     WHEREAS, Everyone can make a difference in Rhode Island by helping to build the
capacity of all nonprofits in all sectors and geographic locations across the State; now, therefore
be it
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby
celebrates and wholeheartedly supports the 5th Anniversary of 401Gives on April 1, 2024, and
asks every Rhode Islander to generously donate and grow our State’s culture of philanthropy; and
be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Cortney M. Nicolato, MS, President and CEO
of United Way of Rhode Island.
