A N   A C T

RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES-AUTOCYCLES

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

SECTION 1. Chapter 31-1 of the General Laws entitled "Definitions and General Code

Provisions" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

31-1-3.1. Autocycles. -- (a) "Autocycle" means only those motor vehicles that:

(1) Do not have more than three (3) wheels in contact with the ground;

(2) Are designed to be controlled with a steering wheel and foot pedals for acceleration,

braking, or shifting;

(3) Are equipped with seating that does not require occupants to straddle or sit astride the

seating; and

(4) Are manufactured and certified to comply with federal safety requirements for a

motorcycle.

(b) Except as otherwise provided in this title, an "autocycle" shall be considered to be a

"motorcycle" as defined in §31-1-3(l).

SECTION 2. Chapter 31-10.1 of the General Laws entitled "Special License for

Motorcycles, Motor Scooters, and Other Motor Driven Cycles" is hereby amended by adding

thereto the following section:

31-10.1-6.1. Autocycles--Exemptions. -- The provisions of §31-10.1-1 through §31-

10.1-6, inclusive, shall not apply to autocycles. Any person licensed as an operator or chauffeur

pursuant to chapter 31-10 may operate an autocycle.

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon passage.
