RELATING TO HEALTH
AND SAFETY -- ADVISORY COMMISSION ON HISTORICAL CEMETERIES

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
SECTION
1. The title of Chapter 23-18.3 of the General Laws entitled "Legislative
Commission
on Historical Cemeteries" is hereby amended to read as follows:
CHAPTER 18.3
LEGISLATIVE COMMISSION ON HISTORICAL CEMETERIES
ADVISORY COMMISSION ON HISTORICAL CEMETERIES
SECTION
2. Section 23-18.3-1 of the General Laws in Chapter 23-18.3 entitled
"Legislative
Commission on Historical Cemeteries" is hereby amended to read as follows:
23-18.3-1.
Establishment -- Purpose -- Membership -- Compensation. -- (a) There is
created
a permanent joint legislative advisory commission to study the
location, condition, and
inventory
of historical cemeteries in Rhode Island and to make recommendations to the
general
assembly
relative to historical cemeteries in Rhode Island.
(b) The commission shall consist of nineteen (19) fourteen (14)
members all of whom
shall be
citizens and residents of this state. One shall be the director of veterans'
cemeteries or his
or her
designee.
(c) One shall be the director of the Rhode Island historical preservation
commission or
his or
her designee.
(d) One shall be the director of the Rhode Island Historical Society or his or
her
designee.
(e) One representative of the League of Cities and Towns to be appointed by the
governor
who shall serve for one year.
(f) The governor, in In consultation with and upon the
recommendation of local
historical
or preservation societies within each county, shall appoint ten (10)
members of the
general
public consisting of two (2)
representatives from each county. to be chosen as follows:
one
representative from each of the five (5) counties to be appointed by the
speaker of the house
and
one representative from each of the five (5) counties to be appointed by the
president of the
senate
who shall serve for two (2) years.
(g) One member of the house of representatives appointed by the speaker who
shall
serve
for two (2) years and one member of the senate appointed by the president of
the senate
who
shall serve for two (2) years.
(h) Three (3) members of the public to be appointed by the governor who shall
serve for
two
(2) years.
(i) The members shall annually elect a chairperson of the commission. who
shall be a
member
of the general assembly. Any vacancy
shall be filled by the authority making the original
appointment.
Members of the commission shall serve without compensation.
SECTION
3. This act shall take effect upon passage.
