AMENDING THE CHARTER OF NORTH PROVIDENCE

It is enacted
by the General Assembly as follows:
SECTION
1. Section 4-2-1 of Chapter 237 of the 1973 Public Laws entitled
"An Act Incorporating the Town of North Providence" is hereby amended
to read as follows:
4-2-1. Establishment of council districts. - On or before
the first Tuesday of March of 1974, the council shall submit to the general
assembly a plan dividing the town into three compact and contiguous districts,
each containing an approximately equal number of inhabitants as determined by
the United States census of 1970, with a recommendation that the plan be
enacted into law and become effective for any election to be held on or after
the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of 1974. The same procedure as described in this
section shall be followed in 1981 and every subsequent ten years based on the
latest federal census. Subsequent
to the latest federal census, and following submission of a finalized map by
the general assembly depicting the new senate and house district lines, the
council shall submit to the general assembly, no later than sixty (60) days
following the receipt of the finalized senate and house district lines, a plan
to divide the town into three (3) compact and contiguous districts each
containing an equal number of inhabitants as determined by the said federal
census, with the recommendation that the plan be enacted into law and become
effective for any election to be held on or after the Tuesday after the first
Monday in November of each even numbered year.
SECTION 2. This act
shall take effect upon passage.
