S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING SOPHIA BOARDMAN ON ACHIEVING

SCOUTING’S MOST DISTINGUISHED HONOR, THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT

     WHEREAS, Since February 2019, over 31,000 girls have joined Scouts BSA, earning the

2

same merit badges, values-based leadership training, and achieving the same ranks; and

3

     WHEREAS, Rising to the challenge, Sophia Boardman of Troop 2 Kingston qualified

4

and secured the exceptional distinction of achieving the high rank of Eagle, becoming South

5

County's first female Eagle Scout, a title and honor that had previously only been awarded to

6

boys for most of the Scouts' 112-year history; and

7

     WHEREAS, Learning important lifelong skills and values, Sophia earned the required

8

merit badges and as the highlight of her scouting years, completed the final step toward obtaining

9

the rank of Eagle Scout by planning and carrying out an extensive Eagle service project; and

10

     WHEREAS, Sophia's Eagle Project was to take on the challenge of establishing wooden

11

shelters for ducks in the South Kingstown Land Trust. Carrying out her project with

12

determination and earnest devotion, she educated herself on the duck's nesting needs, prepared a

13

blueprint of her project, obtained permission from the Trust, and installed four boxes, filled with

14

red cedar shavings, atop poles driven into the ground located at Yawgoo Pond, Cedar Swamp and

15

Rose Brook; and

16

     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth, and to

17

celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders. Sophia Boardman is a remarkable young

18

woman who exemplifies everything an Eagle Scout should be, and all that we hope our children

19

will grow to be; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby honors Sophia

2

Boardman on becoming South County's first female Eagle Scout and for her untiring service to

3

the community. She has truly set a high standard of commitment and dedication by which youth

4

of this great state may follow. We furthermore congratulate her for all she has done to attain the

5

rank of Eagle Scout, and extend our very best wishes for good health and happiness in the months

6

and years ahead; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

8

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Sophia Boardman.
