PROCLAIMING APRIL 28, 2022, TO BE "WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" IN THE STATE | |
OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Workers' Memorial Day takes place each year across the globe on April 28 |
2 | as a day of remembrance for workers killed, disabled or injured while performing their work |
3 | duties, and serves as a call for action to do everything possible to protect the safety and well- |
4 | being of workers and mitigate the possibility of on-the-job injury; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In 1989, the AFL-CIO declared April 28 to be "Workers' Memorial Day" in |
6 | honor, recognition and remembrance of the thousands of working people who are killed or |
7 | injured on the job every year. This date was chosen because it is the day in 1970 when the |
8 | Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 went into effect and promised that every worker has |
9 | a fundamental human right to a safe job and working environment; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The COVID-19 pandemic devastated working families and has highlighted |
11 | just how important safe jobs and working conditions are to every American, Rhode Islander, and |
12 | human being regardless of where they live and work; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The United Nations has recognized Workers' Memorial Day and it is also |
14 | recognized as a national day in many countries including the United States, as well as Australia, |
15 | Argentina, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ireland, Panama, Peru, |
16 | Portugal, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and other nations; now, therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
18 | proclaims April 28, 2022, to be "Workers' Memorial Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it |

2 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Governor of the State of Rhode |
