RELATING TO TOWNS AND CITIES -- GENERAL POWERS

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Morales, Kislak, J Lombardi, Potter, Henries, Williams,
Batista, and Perez

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 45-2 of the General Laws entitled "General Powers" is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     45-2-68. Local snowstorm communication requirement.

     (a) Every municipality within the State of Rhode Island shall be required to provide notice

5

to residents, within at least twenty-four (24) hours prior to any forecasted snowstorm, of street

6

parking bans, and trash pickup delays or cancellations, utilizing technological communication

7

devices including, but not limited to, electronic, digital media, telephonic or any other method

8

available to advise the public.

     (b) Every municipality in the State of Rhode Island shall also provide public parking to

10

enable residents to park their automobiles during parking bans, limited, however, to the duration of

11

the parking ban plus two (2) hours.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would require every municipality in Rhode Island to provide residents twenty-four

2

(24) hours notice by any electronic or digital means, such as digital media and telephonic, as a

3

result of any forecasted snowstorm regarding street parking bans and trash pickup delays or

4

cancellations. Towns and cities would also be required to provide public parking for any residents

5

unable to park their vehicle at their residence as a result of a parking ban.

6

     This act would take effect upon passage.
