EXTENDING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF SUSAN ALDER KAPLAN | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Susan Adler |
2 | Kaplan, the wife of the late Robert Kaplan, loving mother of the late Patricia Kaplan Bowen, |
3 | cherished grandmother of Samantha Ashlee Bowen, sister of Nancy Adler Morrill and the late |
4 | Joan Adler Mark, and an aunt to many nieces and nephews; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Adler Kaplan was the daughter of Lt. Colonel Walter Adler and Celia |
6 | Ernstof Adler. She attended Connecticut College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree and |
7 | Master's degree from Brown University. For twenty-eight years, she taught English at Classical |
8 | High School, and had served as administrator of English and Libraries for the Providence Public |
9 | School System; and |
10 | WHEREAS, In addition, Mrs. Kaplan held numerous roles with the Rhode Island Writing |
11 | Assessment, Rhode Island Writing Project, and the Blackstone Academy, as well as serving as a |
12 | mentor to many throughout the years. She had also been an adjunct professor at Providence |
13 | College and Roger Williams University, and did consulting work in New York, California and |
14 | Egypt with the Ministry of Education; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Dedicated to her alma matter, Mrs. Kaplan had served as a Trustee, a |
16 | Trustee Emerita and Chair of the Corporation Emeriti Executive Committee. She also chaired 100 |
17 | Years of Women at Brown, served as the Associate Chair of the Advisory Council on Brown |
18 | Relations with Tougaloo College, and chaired the Ogden Lectures on International Affairs: and |
19 | WHEREAS, Well-respected both locally and nationally in the field of education, Mrs. |
20 | Kaplan was the first faculty member to be honored by the Classical Alumni Association and was |

1 | named Providence Teacher of the Year, and Teacher of the Year by Good Morning America. She |
2 | was also honored by Brown University with an Outstanding Teacher Educator Award, a Brown |
3 | Bear, and an Ittleson Award; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, the theater, and the arts, Mrs. Adler Kaplan |
5 | was a proud supporter of the Trinity Square Repertory Company, in honor of her late husband, |
6 | who was a founding member. She also served on the boards of Temple Beth-El and The Miriam |
7 | Hospital; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Known for "her tenacity, strength and compassion" Susan Adler Kaplan will |
9 | long be remembered and dearly missed by her family, devoted friends, and the many students she |
10 | guided and enlightened over the course of her amazing life; now, therefore be it |
11 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
12 | extends deepest sympathy on the passing of Susan Adler Kaplan; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
14 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Samantha Ashlee Bowen and Nancy Adler |
15 | Morrill. |
