H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF GERALD J.

HABERSHAW

     WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of Mr. Gerald J.

2

Habershaw. He was the devoted husband of Beth Habershaw and the beloved son of Grace and

3

the late Robert Habershaw; and

4

     WHEREAS, Mr. Habershaw was a 1983 graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School,

5

where he excelled in athletics. He was a star baseball, football and basketball player and was

6

inducted into the Bishop Hendricken Hall of Fame in 2014. Mr. Habershaw also attended

7

Providence College where he attained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education and

8

played baseball; and

9

     WHEREAS, Mr. Habershaw then proceeded to have a distinguished career in the

10

education field where he made a positive difference in the lives of many youngsters. Mr.

11

Habershaw began his professional career as a special education teacher at Pilgrim High School.

12

He later served as the Assistant Principal at Aldrich Junior High School, as the Principal at

13

Warwick Veterans Memorial High School and finally as the Principal at Pilgrim High School. In

14

2010, Mr. Habershaw was named the “Administrator of the Year” by the Rhode Island

15

Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association; and

16

     WHEREAS, Mr. Habershaw always gave back to his community and his school. He was

17

a successful coach for many years at Pilgrim High School, Salve Regina College, and Bishop

18

Hendricken. In his spare time he was an avid golfer and was a member of Kings Crossing in

19

North Kingstown; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Habershaw was a charismatic and widely admired school principal who

2

worked tirelessly to create a quality learning environment for his students. He will be long-

3

remembered by those who knew him and will be sorely missed by his loved ones and many

4

friends and colleagues. The President of Bishop Hendricken High School, Father Robert L.

5

Marciano, and Principal Mr. Mark DeCiccio, released a statement in which they stated that

6

“Gerry was a true Hendricken man, using his many talents and gifts for the service of others. He

7

always made his Hawk family proud in his noble chosen profession of teaching, coaching and

8

leading”. Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi also praised Mr. Habershaw with his statement that

9

“Warwick has suffered a devastating loss. I knew Gerald Habershaw back when I was on the

10

School Committee. He was devoted to his students and co-workers. He touched the lives of so

11

many in this city”; and

12

     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Beth and his mother, Grace, Mr. Habershaw leaves

13

behind his children, Jared, Christian, Zoe, and Tessa Habershaw. He also leaves behind his

14

brothers, Robert and David Habershaw; now, therefore be it

15

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby expresses its deepest

16

condolences on the passing of Mr. Gerald Habershaw; and be it further

17

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

18

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mrs. Beth Habershaw and Family, and Mrs.

19

Grace Habershaw.
