IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2021

____________

S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

THANKING AND CONGRATULATING THE RHODE ISLAND COMPLETE COUNT

COMMITTEE FOR THEIR HARD WORK IN ENSURING THAT EVERY RHODE ISLAND

RESIDENT WAS COUNTED FOR THE 2020 UNITED STATES CENSUS

Introduced By: Senators Cano, McCaffrey, and Goodwin

     Date Introduced: May 18, 2021

Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration

1

WHEREAS, According to Article 1, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, a census

2

of the United States population must be conducted every ten years in order to apportion seats in

3

the United States House of Representatives among the states; and

4

WHEREAS, Ensuring a complete and accurate count of all Rhode Island residents is vital

5

to the state and the well-being of the entire citizenry. In addition to Congressional representation,

6

the census determines how the population is apportioned within state redistricting, and the federal

7

formula for grant allocations for the next decade. Many billions of dollars in federal aid can be

8

lost due to an incomplete or inaccurate census count; and

9

WHEREAS; In 2018, the State of Rhode Island created the "Rhode Island Complete

10

Count Committee" consisting of thirty-one members representing all segments of Rhode Island's

11

population and geography. The Committee was given the purpose and task of developing,

12

recommending and assisting in the administration of a census outreach strategy to encourage and

13

attain full participation in the 2020 federal census; and

14

WHEREAS, Thanks to the countless hours of work and tireless service provided by the

15

members of the Rhode Island Complete Count Committee, Rhode Island was able to complete a

16

full and accurate count of all Rhode Island residents thereby maintaining its two seats in the

17

United States House of Representatives and guaranteeing that Rhode Island receives its fair share

18

of federal grant allocations for the next decade; now, therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby thanks and

1

congratulates the Rhode Island Complete Count Committee for their hard work in ensuring that

2

every Rhode Island resident was counted for the 2020 United States Census; and be it further

3

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

4

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Daniel McKee, Governor of the

5

State of Rhode Island.
