S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY ON THE PASSING OF RETIRED PROVIDENCE

POLICE DETECTIVE STEPHEN J. SPRINGER

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Stephen

2

J. Springer, the devoted husband of Virginia McGinn, and the brother of Nancy Ellen Russen and

3

her husband, Herbert, Phyllis Ventura and her husband, David, and the late Harold "Buddy"

4

Springer; and

5

     WHEREAS, A Providence native, Mr. Springer had also been a resident of Chepachet,

6

and over the past ten years, had made his home in the Town of Barrington; and

7

     WHEREAS, For thirty-five years, Mr. Springer served and protected the residents of the

8

City of Providence within the City's Police Department, retiring at the rank of Detective. Upon

9

his retirement, he worked as an inspector in the Rhode Island office of the Attorney General from

10

2004 to 2017; and

11

     WHEREAS, Mr. Springer’s dedication and service to the community and his profession

12

earned him the Medal of Valor in 1984, the Rhode Island Justice Assistance "Neil Houston

13

Award" in 2001, and induction into the Rhode Island Criminal Justice Hall of Fame in 2018; and

14

     WHEREAS, Admired and revered, Mr. Springer earned numerous accolades from his

15

"Brothers in Blue" including, "an unstoppable investigator, a true professional, a great detective,

16

and just a tenacious investigator"; and

17

     WHEREAS, In addition to his family and police work, Mr. Springer was described as a

18

"renaissance man" who enjoyed woodworking, restoring bicycles, and telling "decades-old stories

19

rich in detail"; and

     WHEREAS, Detective Springer faced many challenges over the course of his career and

2

there is no doubt that he has left this world a far safer and better place because of his life’s

3

endeavors. He will be dearly missed; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes and honors

5

the dedicated service of Retired Detective Stephen Springer and extends our deepest sympathies

6

to his entire family on his passing; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized an directed to

8

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Virginia McGinn.
