S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF MARY ALLERTON

EDDY

     WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Mary

2

Allerton Eddy, the beloved wife for forty-nine years to the late Edward Danforth Eddy, Jr.,

3

former President of the University of Rhode Island, the cherished mother of Edward Eddy, III,

4

and his wife, Yu-Ping, Mary Eddy, Catherine Hahn and her husband, Thomas, David Eddy-

5

Spicer and his wife, Nancy, and the loving grandmother of seven grandchildren and seven great-

6

grandchildren; and

7

     WHEREAS, Mary Eddy, known affectionately as "Polly", was a daughter of the late

8

Mary and Jacob Gould Schurman, Jr., and the sister of Lydia Cushman Schurman; and

9

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Eddy was elected to serve on the town council for ten years, including

10

four as Council President. Her dedication to civic leadership also included serving on the board of

11

Thundermist Health Center; and

12

     WHEREAS, Always supportive of education, the University of Rhode Island, and her

13

husband, Mrs. Eddy and her husband received honorary degrees from the University of Rhode

14

Island in recognition of their valuable support and active participation in the improvement of

15

public education in Rhode Island; and

16

     WHEREAS, Mary Eddy was dedicated to her family and her community, and she will be

17

dearly missed by all; now, therefore be it

18

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby extends deepest

19

condolences on the passing of Mary Allerton Eddy; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit duly certified copies of the is resolution to Edward Eddy, III, David Eddy-Spicer, Mary

3

Eddy, and Catherine Hahn.
