H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING AND THANKING JULIA CALIFANO FOR HER DEDICATED SERVICE TO

THE PEOPLE OF THE TOWN OF BARRINGTON

     WHEREAS, Julia Califano earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from

Cornell University, and is a Graduate of the Johns Hopkins University with a Master's degree in

Creative Writing. To the very good fortune of the citizens of Barrington, she chose to make the

beautiful little town her home in 1976; and

     WHEREAS, Initially involved with her children's school PTAs and with the League of

Women Voters, Mrs. Califano successfully ran for Barrington Town Council and was elected and

re-elected numerous times, serving as President of the Council from 1990 to 1992; and

     WHEREAS, In 2008, Mrs. Califano was elected as the Barrington Town Moderator, a

position she held until choosing to step down in 2020. Her primary duty as Town Moderator has

been to prepare for and conduct the Town's annual financial town meeting, including managing

the meeting, keeping everyone on task, and ensuring that the appropriate rules were followed. It

has been said many times that she was a natural at the task; and

     WHEREAS, In addition, Mrs. Califano has served the Town in myriad additional

capacities over the years. She has been a leader in the Barrington Democratic Town Committee

and has mentored numerous candidates and local activists over the years. She currently serves as

Treasurer of the Barrington Preservation Society Board of Trustees and as a trustee and staffer of

the Barrington Preservation Society Museum; and

     WHEREAS, Julia Califano has touched the lives and hearts of so many people. She is

truly an extraordinary woman who serves as a model of dedicated and conscientious civic service,

and is enormously worthy of our emulation and acknowledgement; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

thanks Julia Califano for her dedicated service to the people of the Town Barrington. We wish her

good health, fulfillment and continued success in all of her future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Julia Califano.
