JOYOUSLY CELEBRATING THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF ARTHUR MEDEIROS | |

1 | WHEREAS, Arthur Medeiros was born ten decades ago on May 10, 1920. The "Roaring |
2 | Twenties" were an age of dramatic social and political change in our country as women were |
3 | finally given the right to vote and a nationwide constitutional ban on the production, importation, |
4 | transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages began; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Mr. Medeiros grew up in the Town of North Providence, which was mostly |
6 | farmland at the time. He entered the United States Army as an infantryman during World War II, |
7 | where he was wounded three times during the Battle of the Bulge in Europe, and was awarded |
8 | three Purple Hearts, and the Silver and Bronze Stars; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 1941, Mr. Medeiros married the love of his life, Irene, and together they |
10 | raised their two daughters. He was employed as a truck driver, which often took him across the |
11 | states, and became a loyal member of the Teamsters Union, from which he retired in 1982; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Medeiros possessed a passion for music. During his |
13 | youth, after not being accepted by the by the Providence Chapter because of an overabundance of |
14 | trombonists, he joined the Attleboro Federation of Musicians. In February of 1954, he was finally |
15 | granted his Providence card, and maintained his membership for over sixty-six years; and |
16 | WHEREAS, For more than forty years, Mr. Medeiros led the "Arthur Medeiros Big |
17 | Band" where he was renowned and beloved for not only his musical leadership, but also for his |
18 | keen sense of humor and story-telling abilities, which kept the audiences and even the band |
19 | members roaring with laughter. In addition, he has taught music, led youth bands, and performed |
20 | for numerous dignitaries and fellow musicians including President and Hillary Clinton, Liberace, |

1 | Sammy Davis Jr., Al Martino, and Patty Page; and |
2 | WHEREAS, At the magnificent and monumental age of 100, Arthur Medeiros is still |
3 | going strong, delighting his senior home neighbors in Bristol with wild tales and amusing |
4 | anecdotes and continuing to play golf. He has been Chair of the Local's golf committee five |
5 | times, and often travels to Florida during the winter months to enjoy the beautiful golf courses in |
6 | the Sunshine State; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Arthur Medeiros's life and accomplishments thus far are awe-inspiring. He |
8 | has a legion of family and friends who love and adore him, and who held an amazing and raucous |
9 | 100-car parade to honor his 100th Birthday. We are likewise pleased to join in the joyous |
10 | celebration of his birthday; now, therefore be it |
11 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
12 | wishes a very happy 100th Birthday to Arthur Medeiros and moreover wish for his continued |
13 | good health, happiness, and many more holes-in-one to come; and be it further |
14 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
15 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Arthur Medeiros. |
