RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING MEMBERS OF THE BISHOP HENDRICKEN | |
HIGH SCHOOL TEAM ON THEIR VICTORIES AT THE RHODE ISLAND AND | |
NATIONAL ACADEMIC DECATHLONS | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Academic Decathlon was co-founded by John Howell, |
2 | publisher of the Warwick Beacon, in 1983. This rigorous competition tests the brain power and |
3 | overall knowledge and thinking skills of high school entrants from across the state, in ten subject |
4 | areas ranging from Science to Art to Mathematics, as well as Economics, Social Science, |
5 | Interview, Language and Literature, Speech, and Essay Writing; and |
6 | WHEREAS, For the ninth consecutive year, the team from Bishop Hendricken High |
7 | School of Warwick, under the expert tutelage of their coach, Sister Carol Anne Murray, RSM, |
8 | took top honors, winning the 36th edition of the annual Decathlon. The school has competed in |
9 | all 36 competitions and has the distinction of being involved even before the start of a state |
10 | competition component; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The RI Academic State Decathlon Competition was held on March 10th and |
12 | included a state team competition and the award of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals to distinguish |
13 | individuals for their outstanding achievements. Bishop Hendricken finished with 42,480 points, |
14 | more than 10,000 points ahead of second-place East Greenwich High School. This year marks the |
15 | 11th state title for Hendricken; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Bishop Hendricken finished in Second Place in the Division III competition |
17 | of the National Decathlon Competition held in Bloomington, Minnesota on April 25th - 27th, |
18 | 2019. The school's team won the Nationals in 2017 and has placed 2nd three out of the past four |
19 | years; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Bishop Hendricken High School team members include Timothy Moren |
2 | (Honors) who was the overall high scorer in the competition and earned a Gold in both Art and |
3 | Essay, Silver in both Mathematics and Literature, and a Bronze in Science; Logan Lemay |
4 | (Honors) who earned a Bronze in Interview; David Weekers (Honors) who earned a Bronze in |
5 | both Science and Art; Timothy Dziekan (Scholastic) who earned a Silver in Music; Xavier Lora |
6 | (Varsity); Jack O’Hara (Varsity) who earned a Bronze in Mathematics; Joseph D’Alfonso |
7 | (Scholastic) who earned a Bronze, in both Literature and Essay, and a Silver in Art; Jonas Kendra |
8 | (Scholastic) who earned a Silver in Mathematics; and Ryan Murphy (Varsity) who earned a |
9 | Bronze in three areas, Economics, Social Studies, and Interview; and |
10 | WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize our youth and to celebrate their |
11 | accomplishments. These distinguished future leaders of our state not only established their |
12 | academic prowess but also exemplify everything that young people can achieve, and they are |
13 | truly deserving of our recognition and praise; now, therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
15 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Bishop Hendricken team members and coach |
16 | and all the Award winners for their 9th straight victory at the Rhode Island Academic Decathlon |
17 | and their commendable 2nd Place finish at the National Competition. We moreover wish them |
18 | much happiness and success in all their future endeavors; and be it further |
19 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
20 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Sister Carol Anne Murray, RSM, Bishop |
21 | Hendricken High School. |
