EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF RAYMOND R. CODERRE

     WHEREAS, Raymond R. Coderre, the devoted husband for fifty-one years to the

Honorable Elaine Coderre, a former member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives,

passed away on April 18, 2019, in Ormond Beach, Florida, after a courageous battle with cancer;

and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Coderre was born in 1945 to the late Russell and Emily Coderre. He

grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Pawtucket with his three brothers, Joseph, William,

and Paul. He was a talented athlete who played football and ran track at Saint Raphael Academy

before graduating in 1963. He also served our nation with honor and integrity for six years as a

member of the Rhode Island National Guard from which he received an Honorable Discharge as

a Specialist 4th Class. As a member of the Guard, he served as a Select Reserve Combat Engineer

with the 118th Dump Truck Support Group; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Coderre was a dedicated family man who worked hard to provide for

his loved ones. His first jobs were at Burger Chef in East Providence, with the Providence Braid

Company, and as a manager for Newport Creamery from 1968 to 1975, but he spent most of his

distinguished professional career working as a business analyst for nearly thirty years with the

Jewelers Board of Trade. He was also active with the National Association of Credit Managers

where he was voted Credit Executive of the Year in 1992. He also served the citizens of our State

and the Rhode Island General Assembly with distinction as an auditor with the Rhode Island

Auditor General’s Office; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Coderre initially attended Bryant University after graduating from High

School but had to leave due to family responsibilities. He returned to Bryant University after

raising his children and attained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1989 with a major in marketing.

He was the first member of his family to graduate high school or college; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Coderre was well-known and admired for his honesty, integrity, ethical

leadership, and his many years of devoted service to the community. He was a member of the

Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he served as the President of the Pawtucket Jaycees and as

District Director for the Rhode Island Jaycees. He received many national, regional, and local

awards in recognition of his tireless service to the Jaycees, and in 1981, he was inducted into the

United States Jaycees Hall of Fame. His most treasured achievement with the Jaycees occurred in

1979 when he was named JCI Senator #27406 and life member, the highest honor that is

bestowed by the Junior Chamber International for Outstanding Service to the organization; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Coderre was also a member of the Knights of Columbus-Father

Eamonn Gill Council 13018 at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Ormond Beach,

Florida, and previously of the Delaney Council 57 in Pawtucket. Mr. Coderre was a passionate

fan of the New England sports teams, especially the Boston Red Sox, Pawtucket Red Sox, and the

New England Patriots. He and his wife vacationed every year at the Sunrise Beach Club in

Daytona Beach, where they chose to retire in 2015. In retirement, he enjoyed attending Daytona

Tortugas baseball games, playing in the Greater Daytona Beach Senior Softball League, spending

time at the YMCA, the Senior Center, and attending concerts and lectures in Florida. He also

continued to remain active in the JCI Senate; and

     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Mr. Coderre leaves behind his children, Bob Coderre

and his wife, Neicy, the Honorable Tom Coderre, Karen Barber and her husband, Calvin, his six

grandchildren, Joey, Hannah, Jack, David, Calvin, and Sashi, and his great-granddaughter Elora

Grace; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Coderre leaves behind a rich legacy of achievement and community

service. He was a devoted family man and a beloved figure within the community. He will be

sorely missed by his family and his many friends and will live on in the hearts of all who knew

and loved him; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby expresses its deepest condolences to the Coderre Family on the

passing of Raymond R. Coderre; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Elaine Coderre and Family.
