PROCLAIMING APRIL, 2019, TO BE "FINANCIAL LITERACY MONTH" IN THE STATE | |
OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Every Rhode Islander deserves the opportunity to achieve financial |
2 | security; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Too many of our neighbors are struggling with financial challenges at a |
4 | rate higher than national peers; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Individuals with strong personal finance skills have the knowledge to |
6 | make informed decisions regarding budgeting, maintaining strong credit, saving, investing, |
7 | and protecting and insuring their assets; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Governments, private businesses, community-based organizations, and |
9 | institutions of education must work together to help consumers make informed decisions about |
10 | their finances and avoid deceptive or predatory practices; and |
11 | WHEREAS, General Treasurer Magaziner launched the Rhode Island Financial |
12 | Empowerment Roundtable which regularly brings together representatives from government, |
13 | nonprofits, education, businesses, and banking to network and share ideas on how to encourage |
14 | economic growth and financial stability among Rhode Islanders; and |
15 | WHEREAS, There is a strong coalition of organizations, passionate educators, and |
16 | invested individuals working tirelessly to expand financial literacy and personal finance |
17 | education in Rhode Island schools; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Rhode Island should endeavor to expand the availability of personal |
19 | finance education, because teaching financial skills to students gives them more economic |

1 | opportunity; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Strengthening the financial skills of all Rhode Islanders is an investment |
3 | in the fundamental promise of a brighter future and building a more prosperous nation; and |
4 | WHEREAS, April is National Financial Literacy Month, where Rhode Island |
5 | highlights its commitment to teaching ourselves and our children about the basics of financial |
6 | education; now, therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
8 | Providence Plantations hereby proclaims April, 2019, to be "Financial Literacy Month." We |
9 | moreover urge all Rhode Islanders to take advantage of various programs and activities that will |
10 | increase their personal financial literacy both during the month of April and throughout the year; |
11 | and be it further |
12 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
13 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the RI JumpStart Coalition. |
