EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE HONORABLE MARGUERITE | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of the |
2 | Honorable Marguerite J. “Marge” Bumpus, Ph.D, of Carolina, Rhode Island, on February 18, |
3 | 2019. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Curtis F. Bumpus; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Marguerite Bumpus was born in Orange, Massachusetts on December 30, |
5 | 1928, the daughter of the late Axel and Ann Johnson. She had an exemplary professional career |
6 | as an educator, first as an elementary school teacher and later as a professor at the University of |
7 | Rhode Island and as the Acting Vice President of URI. During her tenure at URI, she served on |
8 | the Faculty Senate and was the former Chair of the Board on Student Conduct. She also served as |
9 | the Chair of the Department of Education. After she retired from teaching, she served as the |
10 | Interim Vice President of Student Development; and |
11 | WHEREAS, In 1994, Marguerite Bumpus was elected to the Rhode Island House of |
12 | Representatives from District 52 as a Democrat and represented the citizens of Richmond, Exeter |
13 | and West Greenwich with honor, integrity and tireless devotion from 1995 to 1997; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Marguerite Bumpus earned numerous prestigious awards in honor of her |
15 | long and distinguished record as an educator and public servant, including the URI Foundation’s |
16 | “Teaching Excellence Award”. She also was awarded an endowed Literacy Scholarship; and |
17 | WHEREAS, In addition to being an award-winning educator and an elected public |
18 | servant, Marguerite Bumpus was also a published author, real estate agent, literacy volunteer, an |
19 | accomplished international speaker, a licensed pilot, holder of a CDL truck drivers’ and a |

1 | chauffeurs’ license, and was a devoted mother to five children. Her love for her family and |
2 | friends, her public service to the State of Rhode Island and to literacy volunteerism, and her |
3 | ability to excel at so many different things will be long remembered by all who knew her and |
4 | loved and admired her; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The Honorable Marguerite J. Bumpus leaves behind her children, Brenda |
6 | LaFazia and her husband, Tom, Barry Bumpus and his fiancée, Tomoe, Brent and his wife, Jinky, |
7 | and Bruce and his wife, Ginger. She also leaves behind twelve grandchildren and seventeen great- |
8 | grandchildren. She also leaves a sister, Nancy Chiasson. She was predeceased by a son, Brian, |
9 | and a grandson, Benjamin; now, therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
11 | Providence Plantations hereby expresses its sincerest condolences on the passing of the |
12 | Honorable Marguerite J. Bumpus, Ph.D; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
14 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Brenda LaFazia, Barry Bumpus, Brent Bumpus, |
15 | and Bruce Bumpus. |
