It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Chapter 23-17.15 of the General Laws entitled "Long-Term Health Care |
2 | Goals And Values" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section: |
3 | 23-17.15-3. Alzheimer's disease brain bank task force established. |
4 | (a) There is hereby created and established a task force to be known as "The Rhode |
5 | Island Alzheimer's disease brain bank task force" (the "task force"). The purpose of the task force |
6 | shall be to assess the need, desirability, and feasibility of establishing a brain bank for |
7 | Alzheimer's disease research and other research related to dementia-associated abnormalities of |
8 | the brain. |
9 | (b) The task force shall consist of members as follows: |
10 | (1) The director of the department of health, or designee; |
11 | (2) The state medical examiner, or designee; |
12 | (3) A representative from the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital, to be |
13 | selected by the program's governing body; |
14 | (4) A representative from the Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science |
15 | at Brown University, to be selected by the institute's governing body; |
16 | (5) A representative from the George and Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience at the |
17 | University of Rhode Island, to be selected by the institute's governing body; |
18 | (6) A representative from the Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology at the |

1 | Providence VA Medical Center, to be selected by the center's governing body; |
2 | (7) The Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute at Rhode Island Hospital, to be selected |
3 | by the institute's governing body; and |
4 | (8) A representative from the Rhode Island funeral directors association, to be selected by |
5 | the association; |
6 | (c) The membership of the task force shall receive no compensation for their services. |
7 | (d) On or before December 1, 2019, the task force shall submit a written report to the |
8 | governor and to the general assembly detailing its activities and providing recommendations |
9 | relating to the need, desirability, feasibility and costs of establishing a brain bank for Alzheimer's |
10 | disease research and other research related to the human brain and diseases and abnormalities of |
11 | the brain. The general assembly shall assess this report and make determinations on what further |
12 | actions, if any, should be taken to develop or support a brain bank. In the event the general |
13 | assembly determines to take further action regarding the brain bank, the task force shall remain in |
14 | place to assist in facilitating and implementing those actions. |
15 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
