RELATING TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY - HOUSE OFFICE OF ECONOMICS

     Introduced By: Representatives Marshall, Abney, Shekarchi, Shanley, and Costantino

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 22-6 of the General Laws entitled "Committees and Staff" is

hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     22-6-11.2. House office of economics.

     (a) There is created, under the supervision of the joint committee on legislative services,

an office of economics. It shall provide the house of representatives, in conjunction with the fiscal

office, regular economic forecasts and trending reports concerning the economic impact of

pending legislation and the budget. It shall promote state government financial stability and

responsibility through sound economic guidance and forecasts.

     (b) All departments, offices, boards, and agencies of the state shall cooperate with the

office of economics and furnish it with such support, advice, information, documents and

otherwise, data analysis and other assistance as may be necessary or desirable.

     (c) In furtherance of its mission, the office of economics shall collaborate with and

partner with the economics departments at all state colleges, for their counsel and expertise, the

office shall provide legislative internships for state college economics majors to provide them

hands-on experience of the relationship between such economics and responsible government.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

     This act would establish an office of economics to assist the house of representatives

during its review of the financial impact of proposed legislation.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
