RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING MEMBERS OF THE BISHOP HENDRICKEN

HIGH SCHOOL TEAM ON THEIR VICTORIES AT THE RHODE ISLAND ACADEMIC

DECATHLON

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Academic Decathlon was co-founded by John Howell,

2

publisher of the Warwick Beacon, in 1983. This rigorous competition tests the brain power and

3

overall knowledge and thinking skills of high school entrants from across the state, in subject

4

areas ranging from science to art to math, as well as speech, interview, and essay writing; and

5

     WHEREAS, For the eighth consecutive year, the team from Bishop Hendricken High

6

School of Warwick, under the expert tutelage of their coach, Sister Carol Anne Murray, RSM,

7

took top honors, winning the 35th edition of the annual Decathlon and earning the right to advance

8

to the Nationals; and

9

     WHEREAS, The Decathlon includes a team competition component and awards Gold

10

Medals to distinguish individuals for their outstanding achievements. Bishop Hendricken finished

11

with 45,280 points, almost 12,000 more than second-place Johnston Senior High School; and

12

     WHEREAS, Bishop Hendricken High School team members include Yongyuan Huang,

13

who finished in first place in Honor division and won a Bronze in Language & Literature, a

14

Bronze in Music, a Gold in Science, a Silver in Art, a Gold in Mathematics, a Gold in Economics,

15

and a Gold in Social Science; Dylan Temel, who finished in second place in Honor division and

16

won a Gold in Language & Literature, a Gold in Music, a Gold in Art, a Gold in Mathematics, a

17

Bronze in Economics, a Gold in Essay, and a Silver in Social Science; Mitchell Boyer, who

18

finished in first place in Scholastic division and won a Gold in Language & Literature, a Bronze

19

in Music, a Gold in Science, a Gold in Art, a Gold in Economics, a Gold in Essay, a Bronze in

Speech and a Bronze in Social Science; Jaidan Idarraga-Cano, who finished in first place in

2

Varsity division and won a Gold in Language & Literature, a Bronze in Music, a Gold in Science,

3

a Gold in Art, a Bronze in Mathematics, a Silver in Economics, a Bronze in Essay, a Silver in

4

Speech, a Bronze in Interview, and a Gold in Social Science; A. Alden Pratt, who finished in

5

second place in Scholastic division and won a Bronze in Language & Literature, a Silver in

6

Music, a Bronze in Science, a Bronze in Art, a Bronze in Mathematics, and a Silver in Social

7

Science; Ryan Murphy, who finished in second place in Varsity division and won a Silver in

8

Language & Literature, a Gold in Music, a Bronze in Science, a Silver in Art, a Silver in

9

Mathematics, a Bronze in Speech, and a Bronze in Social Science; Harris Gazder, who finished in

10

third place in Varsity division and won a Bronze in Language & Literature, a Silver in Music, a

11

Bronze in Art, a Gold in Interview, and a Silver in Social Science; and Timothy Dziekan and

12

Stephen Marandola, who contributed to the team's overall win; and

13

     WHEREAS, At the United States Academic Decathlon held in April, the team placed

14

second in its division. Two students also placed individually with Steve Huang, 3rd overall in the

15

DII Honor Division, and Jaidan Idarraga-Cano, 2nd overall in the DII Varsity Division. This is

16

the third time Hendricken has had individual students place nationally. Steve Huang also earned

17

highest overall team score; and

18

     WHEREAS, These distinguished future leaders of our state not only established their

19

academic prowess but also conducted themselves as true gentlemen throughout the competitions;

20

and

21

     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize our youth and to celebrate their

22

accomplishments. All the members of the Bishop Hendricken High School team and the

23

individual Decathlon Gold Medal winners exemplify everything that young people can achieve,

24

and they are truly deserving of our recognition and praise; now, therefore be it

25

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

26

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Bishop Hendricken team members and coach

27

and all the Gold Medal winners for their victories at the Rhode Island Academic Decathlon. We

28

moreover wish them much happiness and success in all their future endeavors; and be it further

29

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

30

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Sister Carol Anne Murray, RSM, Bishop

31

Hendricken High School.
