CONGRATULATING JESSICA DALTORIO, KAYLEE GOYETTE, JILLIAN HOPPE, AND

CONNOR MCMULLIN OF NORTH SMITHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL FOR FINISHING IN

FIRST PLACE IN THE NATIONAL HISTORY DAY EVENT HELD AT RHODE ISLAND

COLLEGE ON APRIL 28, 2018

     WHEREAS, National History Day is a nonprofit organization that operates an annual

2

project-based contest for students in grades 6-12. Begun in 1974, today National History Day has

3

affiliates in all fifty states, Washington D.C., and numerous countries across the globe with more

4

than 500,000 students participating through local contests as individuals or in a group, in one of

5

five categories: Documentary, Exhibit, Paper, Performance or Website; and

6

     WHEREAS, Each year, National History Day uses a theme in order to provide a lens

7

through which students can engage in and examine history through the practice of critical inquiry

8

and by asking probing and insightful questions. The theme for 2018 is Conflict and Compromise;

9

and

10

     WHEREAS, In 2018, four promising students from North Smithfield High School

11

studied, reflected on, and researched the impact of the Spanish Civil War on individuals. These

12

bright and precocious students worked together on a project entitled "Through the Eyes of Dali:

13

The Real Faces Behind the Spanish Civil War," in which they created a representative tableau of

14

a Salvador Dali painting and gave an enlightening and thoughtful presentation on this topic. For

15

their hard work and innovative approach to this subject matter, Jessica Daltorio, Kaylee Goyette,

16

Jillian Hoppe and Connor McMullin finished in first place in the performance category and

17

received a superior rating at the State National History Day event and will be representing Rhode

18

Island in the National History Day competition being held at the University of Maryland from

June 11 through June 14, 2018; now, therefore be it

2

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

3

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Jessica Daltorio, Kaylee Goyette, Jillian Hoppe and

4

Connor McMullin of North Smithfield High School for finishing in first place in the National

5

History Day event held at Rhode Island College on April 28, 2018, and we wish them the best of

6

luck and continued success at the National History Day competition on June 11 through June 14,

7

2018; and be it further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Jessica Daltorio, Kaylee Goyette, Jillian Hoppe

10

and Connor McMullin.
