COMMEMORATING MEMORIAL DAY ON MAY 28, 2018, IN THE STATE OF RHODE

ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Each year, Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of the scourge of war

2

and its bitter aftermath of sorrow; and

3

     WHEREAS, Memorial Day has traditionally been devoted to paying homage to loved

4

ones who lie in hallowed graves throughout the land, having sacrificed their lives that war might

5

end; and

6

     WHEREAS, In tribute to these silent dead, it is fitting that we lift up our voices together

7

in supplication to Almighty God for wisdom in our search for enduring peace; and

8

     WHEREAS, The United States Congress, in a Joint Resolution approved May 11, 1950,

9

provided that Memorial Day should annually be set aside as a day of prayer for permanent peace;

10

and

11

     WHEREAS, Today and every day, the servicemen and women we have lost should be

12

remembered by rededicating ourselves to strengthening our Nation's promise. With love, grace,

13

and reflection, our fallen fellow Americans, both known and unknown, who sacrificed their

14

freedom to ensure our own, should be honored; now, therefore be it

15

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

16

Providence Plantations hereby recognizes Memorial Day on Monday, May 28, 2018, as a day of

17

prayer for permanent peace and moreover encourages all Rhode Islanders to pause for one minute

18

at 3:00 PM (local time) on Memorial Day, to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so

19

many to provide freedom for all, in keeping with the Executive Order (2000) on the National

Moment of Remembrance; and be it further

2

     RESOLVED, That this House, in commemoration of this event, also urges all our

3

residents to join together in their homes, places of work, and places of worship, to pray for

4

permanent peace and to continue to pray for our state and our nation.
