ROLE IN SECURING THE RELEASE OF THREE AMERICAN DETAINEES FROM NORTH | |

1 | WHEREAS, On May 9, 2018, Americans received the good news that three American |
2 | citizens being detained in North Korea, Kim Dong-chul, Tony Kim, also known as Kim Sang- |
3 | duk, and Kim Hak-song, were being released thanks to months of encouraging diplomacy |
4 | conducted by President Trump and his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Kim Dong-chul, a businessman, was arrested in October of 2015 and |
6 | sentenced to ten years of hard labor after being accused of spying. Tony Kim was teaching at |
7 | Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, when he was arrested and detained in April of |
8 | 2017. Kim Hak-song was a volunteer at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology when |
9 | he was arrested and detained in May of 2017; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Thanks to the diplomatic breakthroughs that have occurred this year |
11 | between the United States and North Korea, accomplished in large part due to the innovative |
12 | approach to diplomacy conducted by President Trump, three American prisoners now have their |
13 | freedom again and there is great hope for lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula; now, therefore |
14 | be it |
15 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
16 | Providence Plantations hereby thanks and congratulates President Trump for his role in securing |
17 | the release of three detainees from North Korea; and be it further |
18 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
19 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of |
