A N   A C T

RELATING TO TOWNS AND CITIES -- ELECTION AND QUALIFICATION OF OFFICERS

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Messier, Tobon, and Johnston

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 45-4 of the General Laws entitled "Election and Qualification of

Officers" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     45-4-19. Combination of voting districts for special city council election in the city of

4

Pawtucket.

     (a) Notwithstanding any provision of the general or public laws to the contrary, the

6

Pawtucket board of canvassers shall combine councilmatic voting districts for a special primary

7

election and special election in 2018 to fill a vacancy on the Pawtucket city council. The districts

8

shall be combined so that there shall be at least one voting district in each of the six (6) council

9

wards in the city.

     (b) Once the voting districts are combined as provided in subsection (a) of this section,

11

the local board must advertise the combination of districts in a newspaper of general circulation

12

in the city no less than seven (7) days before the special primary election and again no less than

13

seven (7) days prior to the special election.

14

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would allow the city of Pawtucket to fill a vacancy on the Pawtucket City

2

Council by combining councilmatic voting districts for a special primary election and special

3

election in 2018. The combining of voting districts must be advertised in a newspaper of general

4

circulation in the city no less than seven (7) days before the special primary election and again no

5

less than seven (7) days prior to the special election.

6

     This act would take effect upon passage.
