A N   A C T

RELATING TO TOWNS AND CITIES - GENERAL POWERS

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Roberts, Newberry, and Giarrusso

     Date Introduced: February 08, 2018

     Referred To: House Municipal Government

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 45-2 of the General Laws entitled "General Powers" is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     45-2-67. Payment of police training.

     Any law enforcement agency within the state of Rhode Island that hires a law

5

enforcement officer working for another municipality within the state of Rhode Island shall, upon

6

hiring such law enforcement officer, reimburse the municipality from which it hired the officer

7

for all costs and expenses and expenses associated with the training and education, including

8

costs of uniforms, weapons and other incidental expenses, of said officer provided that said costs

9

of training and education were incurred within five (5) years of the date of hire.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

RELATING TO TOWNS AND CITIES - GENERAL POWERS

     This act would require any police department that hires an officer employed by another

2

police department within the state of Rhode Island to reimburse the municipality for which the

3

officer first worked, for all costs and expenses associated with the officer's training and education

4

provided that such costs were incurred within five years of the hiring.

5

     This act would take effect upon passage.
